Honorary Associate Professor Daphne E Lee, University of Otago, discusses recent fossil discoveries from Miocene Zealandia.
Otago possesses a wealth of fossil treasures hidden in the rocks beneath our feet. They tell the history of the plants and animals of southern Zealandia, from rainforests surrounding volcanic lakes at Foulden and Hindon to amber forests at Pomahaka and Roxburgh.
These fossil taoka held in the Geology Museum collections at the University of Otago provide evidence for changing climates, past biodiversity and fascinating ecosystems that are a key part of our biological heritage.
