Lake Stories - Te Pātaka Kai o Tūwiriroa

  • Otago Museum 419 Great King Street Dunedin New Zealand (map)

Join a karakia by Te Runaka Ōtakou to introduce this 30-minute film on the history of the Waihola/Waipouri wetlands.

Te Nukuroa o Matamata is a Jobs for Nature project, managed by Te Rūnaka o Ōtākou, based at the Sinclair Wetlands/Te Nohoaka o Tukiauau.

Te Nukuroa o Matamata seeks to meet the aspiration of Kāi Tahu to re-establish a network of tribally significant mahika kai areas and species at the Waihora/Waipōuri wetlands. This serves the iwi vision to increase the ability of Kāi Tahu to exercise rakatirataka and kaitiakitaka over such areas and species, engendering positive environmental and cultural outcomes, and protecting Kāi Tahu values and interests.

Te Nukuroa o Matamata project seeks to reverse the negative effects of drainage and other environmental impacts at the Waihora/Waipōuri wetlands, as well as improving the water quality and increasing the native biodiversity, through environmental restoration and pest management.
