Morning is a great time to check out the bird feeding stations full of tūī, korimako and kākā, followed by takahē feeding at 11 am, and a visit to the reptile enclosures to see Otago skink, jewelled gecko and tuatara.

Hosted by Orokonui Ecosanctuary, Te Korowai o Mihiwaka: The Ecosanctuary is home to many threatened species of native birds, plus skinks, geckos and tuatara, as well as threatened habitats, all safely enclosed within a nine-kilometre predator proof fence. A wide range of research and education is undertaken here as well as the raising of Haast tokoeka, one of the rarest kiwi, and successful breeding of takahē in the wild.
