Otago Tramping and Mountaineering Club day trip to unique landscape within the City of Dunedin boundary. Drive time from Dunedin 50 minutes to 1 hour.
Sutton Salt Lake is New Zealand’s only inland salt lake. It has no outlet, so the lake has concentrated the salts from the surrounding soils. The Otago Tramping and Mountaineering Club members will guide groups of walkers over the 3.5km loop walk to Sutton Salt Lake, located on a Department of Conservation Reserve. Emeritus Professor Alison Cree (University of Otago) will explain the importance of this landscape to native lizards, touching on the role rocks play in the thermal ecology of the species that live on/in them.
This tramp is an easy 45-minute to one-hour walk. For safety this trip is limited to 40 people.
Meet at 9am at the Sunnyvale Sports Centre to carpool to Sutton Salt Lake and Middlemarch ($20 to driver) or meet us at the start of the track (free).
If driving from Dunedin, drive south of Dunedin to Outram and take SH87, heading towards Middlemarch. Turn left onto Kidds Road before you cross the railway line at Sutton. The reserve entrance is about 2.5 km along this road, on the left. Allow 50 minutes to 1 hour to drive from Sunnyvale Sports Centre.
Cost: $20pp for a carpool ride to be paid on the day.
