Volcanic Rocks of Aramoana Spit

  • Aramoana Beach Aramoana, Otago, 9082 New Zealand (map)

Mike Palin studies minerals and rocks, how they record Earth history, and their vital role in making life possible on our planet. His fascination with geology was sparked growing up in southern California. He worked in the University of Otago Geology Department for 21 years and is now retired.

Peer into the fiery volcanic past that built today’s landscapes around Otago Harbour. Observe hands-on how and why eruptions changed dramatically through time to build the landscapes we see today around Otago Harbour and surrounding hills. Engage in lively speculation of what the future may bring. It will involve mostly flat walking through loose sand with possible scrambling over wet, jagged rocks depending on tides. Guided by Mike Palin from the University of Otago’s Geology Department.

Meet at the Aramoana Beach car park.

Free.
