The Mystery of the Giant Birds

  • Tūhura Otago Museum 419 Great King Street Dunedin New Zealand (map)

The elephant birds of Madagascar and the giant moa of Aotearoa were true titans of the bird world—colossal, flightless, and uniquely adapted to their island homes. But how did they reach such remote locations?

Hear all about this evolutionary enigma—and how fossil discoveries and cutting-edge genetic research may hold the key to solving it—in The Mystery of the Giant Birds.

Premiering in New Zealand at Tūhura Otago Museum, this fascinating documentary tracks the rise and fall of moa and elephant birds, exploring their origins, adaptations, and eventual extinction.

Along with being amongst the first people in the country to see The Mystery of the Giant Birds, you'll also get to hear firsthand from ancient DNA expert Dr Nic Rawlence and Head of Natural Science Collections Kane Fleury, both of whom made vital contributions to the film. The Museum’s Collections team assisted with 3D scanning, collection access, and exclusive footage, while Dr Nic Rawlence provided expert insights into New Zealand’s moa species, helping to shape the documentary's scientific narrative.

Tickets include a drink and nibbles to enjoy during the screening.
