Tēnā koe te Whenua, Dear Earth, - Letters to the Land

  • Quarantine Island Kamau Taurua (map)

How often do we think about our relationship with the earth beneath our feet?

On daily during the Festival - you just have to get to the island! Join the Port-to-Port Island Treasure Hunt event departing daily 12.55 pm from Port Chalmers or 1.15 pm from Portobello.

This is an opportunity to share what whenua means to you while exploring beautiful Kamau Taurua Quarantine Island!

During the Festival writing stations will be placed around the motu. Write a letter, a poem or draw a picture, and post it to the whenua via the letterbox, or you are welcome to keep your letter to take home.

Posted letters will be on display in the Married Quarters building on the island to inspire others during the festival. Sign your name or keep it anonymous!

Kamau Taurua Quarantine Island is a hidden gem (and a public reserve) in the Wai Ōtākou Otago Harbour. It's always open to day visitors and a wonderful place to connect with the whenua.

Take the ferry or your own transport, and explore regenerating native forests and historic buildings from Ōtepoti Dunedin’s colonial quarantine period.

Hosted by Kamau Taurua Quarantine Island Community: Facilities are managed by a charity, the Kamau Taurua Quarantine Island Community which also organises volunteer days on the island. You can find out more at Kamau Taurua Quarantine Island Community
