Town Belt Traverse

  • Start Southern Cemetery 22 South Road Dunedin, Otago, 9011 New Zealand (map)

The Town Belt Traverse is a free self-guided walk for people of all ages. The route is reasonably pram friendly, and

you are welcome to bring your dog but they must be kept on a lead.

There will be interpretation points along the way making your walk fun and giving an appreciation of the Town Belt’s history and ecological importance.

The walk starts at the historic Southern Cemetery and finishes at Woodhaugh Gardens. Participants will receive a map and instructions for the route. Park your car around the Oval area (not in the cemetery car park) and walk through the cemetery from the South Road entrance, following the road until you get to a flat area that is the cemetery car park.

Information:

Marshals will be available at each stopping point and road crossing areas.

You can start the traverse any time from 10am to 11.30 am but must reach Woodhaugh Garden by 1.30pm to hand in your ticket for a free sausage sizzle.

Toilets will be available for those on the Traverse at Jubilee Park, Moana Pool, Olveston Historic Home, and Woodhaugh Gardens.

Transport:

At the starting point, parking can found around the Oval.

The Heritage Bus runs from Woodhaugh back to the start for a gold coin donation.

The Town Belt Traverse is your opportunity to explore one of New Zealand’s great reserve sites. Good luck and we look forward to seeing you at the Traverse.

Cost: Free – register on the day at Southern Cemetery.

Hosted by Dunedin Amenities Society: New Zealand’s oldest environmental society established in October 1888. The Society has made a significant mark on the city through its development of public spaces, consistent environmental advocacy and vocal support for the protection of a landscape unique to where we call home. Sit on a seat in a public park and admire the trees and there’s every chance that the seat and the trees were donated and planted by the Society in the last 125 years.
